Sažetak
Contemporary theory introduced the topic of the body in order to question the sovereignty of the self-conscious subject. The intention of this paper is to follow the discussion conducted since then. It opens with Merleau- Ponty´s phenomenology of the flesh, continues with Levinas´ critique of it to conclude the first part with Derrida´s and feminist critique of Levinas´ point of departure. The second part is devoted to Nietzsche´s conceptualization of the body as an “inscription surface” which is introduced via Foucault´s elaboration and concluded by the critique of Judith Butler. In the final section the treatment of the body in cultural studies is briefly addressed.
