Sažetak
Quality indicators are measurable, objective, quantitative measures of key system elements performance. They indicate the extent up to which a certain system meets the needs and expectations of the customers. Laboratories accredited according to ISO 15189, the current standard for medical laboratories, are obliged to systematically monitor and evaluate their quality indicators. The crucial point for successful implementation is to clearly and unambiguously define indicators. The ability to measure the indicator is also of vital importance. Quality indicators can indicate the quality of the key, strategic, and support processes. It is important that quality indicators address all three key processes in the laboratory: preanalytical, analytical and postanalytical. Besides for self-evaluation, quality indicators are also used for benchmarking. While proficiency testing and interlaboratory comparison are well established for quite some time, until the last two decades some preanalytical and postanalytical external quality assurance programs have also been launched and successfuly implemented in several countries. Although Croatian Society of Medical Biochemists has recently launched a pilot extra-analytical survey, there is still not a formal and systematic program of quality assurance for the extra-analytical phase in our country. One recent survey study on extra-analytical phase in Croatia has indicated that there is a need for improving the extra-analytical practices, especially blood sampling procedures. Therefore, the formal EQA program covering the extra-analytical phase is highly recommended and should be implemented both nationwide as internationally. In this lecture we discuss the general idea and concept of applicability of quality indicators.
