Sažetak
Common beech is the most spread species of forest vegetation in Croatia. Beech forests take 35% of total forest surface. Natural rejuvenation in of normal structure beech forests in favourable environment conditions is good, however, in altered ecological conditions under the influence of climate change as well as in cases of forest deterioration due to air, soil and water polution, it is necessary to conduct suplements to natural rejuvenation by inserting additional seeds and sprouts. Therefore, there is more and more emphasis in the need for seeds and seed conservation in Croatia and the rest of the world. Full yield of common beech seeds has been recorded in 2001 in the whole forest area. Common beech seed has been collected in 77 provenances of mountain forest region of central and northern Croatia. Analysis of laboratory germinability, health condition and nursery germinability in seeds have been made. Laboratory seed germinability was low and frequented from 1 to 37%. Nursery germinability was also low and frequented from 0 - 8%. Average percentage of rotten and diseased seed was 62%. Beech health condition analysis showed infection with saprophytic and parasitic fungi on every sample. Through phythopathological analysis and molecular diagnostics following fungi species have been determined on beech seeds: Alternaria alternata, Arthrobotrys superba, Botrytis cinerea, Fusarium spp., Penicillium spp., Trichothecium roseum, Mucor spp., Graphium sp., Chaetomium sp.
