Sažetak
Medicine is traditionally considered a science and an art, the humanities ; it has been from its beginning, and it still is today, a science and an art. Science, on its own, is capable of providing healing, comfort or cure. The humanities, on their own, are capable of providing healing, comfort or cure. However, in order for medicine to function most effectively, to provide the maximum possible opportunity for healing, comfort or cure for a person or society, it should ideally integrate science and the humanities. And, not just integrate, but science and the humanities should also ideally be in constant communication with each other, providing feedback for achieving and maintaining a healthy body, mind and spirit. As such, science and the humanities have a relationship with each other within the context of medicine and health care, not unlike the relationship between two people in a marriage. In such a relationship, whether between husband and wife in a marriage, or between science and the humanities in medicine, the integrated whole can be greater than the sum of the isolated individual parts. And not only can the integrated whole be greater than the sum of the isolated individual parts, but it can also be potentially transformational, leading to a change in character or condition, through healthy integration of body, mind and spirit.
