Sažetak
European aspects of multilingualism are presented through language policy documents and other documents that promote a common commitment to preserve and develop the sustainable linguistic and cultural diversity of Europe and to successfully overcome language barriers and establish intercultural dialogue. The language policy of the European Union is based on the principles of action of the Council of Europe during the last six decades, which has developed numerous principles and recommendations that serve as guidelines to implement the language policy of the European Union. Raising awareness and encouraging the development of the linguistic and cultural resources of every individual are the basic postulates whose aim is to improve one's linguistic repertoire within and outside the educational system from the earliest age. The role of early language learning (both mother tongue and foreign language) is to be particularly emphasised (due to the participation of all children in the process of education). Thus, teachers in early language learning are responsible for implementing language policies and for developing strategies and resources for language learning. In its practical application this approach comes down to what can be called a formula of plurilingualism, or, in other words, the ability of every individual to communicate in two languages, not including his/her mother tongue, which makes a person plurilingual and significantly contributes to the multilingualism of the social community in both historically defined multilingual communities and in communities of acquired multilingualism.
