Sažetak
The diet of common stingray, Dasyatis pastinaca, in the eastern Adriatic Sea was investigated with respect to fish size and season. Stomach contents of 269 specimens, 18.5 to 99.6 cm in TL, collected by bottom-trawl from January 2006 to December 2009 were analysed. The preys belonged to five major groups: Cephalopoda, Polychaeta, Stomatopoda, Decapoda and Teleostei. Decapod crustaceans were the most important ingested preys (%IRI = 76.3) especially for fish up to 70 cm TL. Teleosts were second in importance (%IRI = 16.9), whereas other prey groups were of minor importance and were probably occasional ingested food. Decapods Processa canaliculata (%IRI = 2.2), Alpheus glaber (%IRI = 1.4) and teleost Lesueurigobius friessi (%IRI = 0.7) were the most frequent preys. With fish growth, the proportion of decapods decreased whereas that of teleosts and cephalopods increased. Diet composition showed little seasonal variations ; decapods were the most important preys in all seasons, especially during summer. The average percentage of empty stomachs showed seasonal variations, with maximal occurrence in winter (25.4%) and minimal in summer (2.6%). The lowest feeding frequency recorded in the winter is probably related with lower sea temperature.
