Sažetak
A method employing solid-phase extraction (SPE) and liquid chromatography- tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS-MS) was developed for a simultaneous determination of trace levels of ten selected drug target residues (DTRs) in untreated (RW) and biologically treated (SE) wastewater. The method was applied to study the occurrence and elimination of selected psychoactive substances in the central wastewater treatment plant of the city of Zagreb during a period of 8 months. The concentrations of all measured DTRs in untreated wastewater were rather low and never exceeded 0.5 µg/L. The average concentrations (n = 39) of individual DTRs were rather different and were in a range from 6.5±6.6 ng/L (amphetamine) to 294±83 ng/L (morphine). The highest average elimination efficiency was achieved for morphine (77±11%) and 6-acetyl morphine (78±13%), while rather low and highly variable elimination was achieved for EDDP (3±17%) and methadone (26±16%). The consumption of 5 selected illicit drugs, including heroin, cocaine, amphetamine, ecstasy and cannabis, was estimated for the city of Zagreb, based on the representative mass loads of the corresponding DTRs, determined in daily-composite RW samples and the average excretion rates, reported in the literature. The study showed that in Zagreb cannabis (1000 kg/year), heroin (75 kg/year) and cocaine (47 kg/year) were comparatively more frequently used as compared to amphetamine-type drugs (1-3 kg/year). Moreover, the mass loads of stimulating drugs (cocaine, amphetamines) were regularly higher on weekends as compared to weekdays. A comparison of the illicit drug consumption from this study with the epidemiology reports, based on the addict treatment records, suggested a much higher number of addicts than official estimates, in particularly with respect to the cocaine addicts [2].
