Sažetak
Consequences and limited possibilities of an abnormal state of a 376 MVA synchronous generator are analyzed. The abnormal state includes an unintentional disconnection of the generator from the power system during which all the devices were acting as predicted except for the excitation current breaker which didn't open due to the relay fault, as a result of which the turbine-generator was retarding with the excitation current turned on. Such an event could lead to an unacceptable overheating of the rotor windings, of the stator as well as the connected transformers. The impact of these occurrences on the operation of the turbine-generator is analyzed taking into consideration duration of the fault, magnitude of the excitation current and characteristics of the turbine-generator set and the other components connected to the generator circuit. It has been determined that duration of the retardation as well as magnitude of the excitation current have a substantial influence on the heating of windings. This example indicates the necessity of introduction of the excitation current limiter which would depend on the voltage vs. frequency rate, since in the analyzed case the excitation system forced the excitation current due to the voltage decrease regardless of the frequency decrease.
