Sažetak
The thesis focuses on determining the origins (mythological, legendary or folkloric) of magical creatures in the Harry Potter novel series, as well as whether the author, J. K. Rowling, remains true to the traditional depiction of the creatures she adopts. The creatures are divided into three groups: animals, fairies and related creatures, and other creatures. The thesis explores the background and traces the origins of individual creatures, also establishing common treats of each group. The role of magical creatures in Harry Potter series of novels is analyzed, as well as their portrayal and the ways in which their background is altered in the novels. The first group includes eighteen animals: Acromantula, Basilisk, Bicorn, Chimaera, Cockatrice, Dragon, Griffin, Grim, Hippocampus, Hippogriff, Mooncalf, Phoenix, Re´em, Sea Serpent, Three Headed Dog (Cerberus), Unicorn and Winged horses. The group of fairies and related creatures consist of twenty-one beings that are almost exclusively based on folklore. These creatures are: Banshee, Boggart, Bugbear, Erkling, Fairy, Giant, Goblin, Gnome, Grindylow, Hag, Hinkypunk, House-elf, Imp, Kappa, Leprechaun, Pixie, Red Cap, Troll (Ogre), Vampire, Wood-nymph and Veela. The third group includes eight creatures that are composed of a human and an animal part, coming from different traditions. These are: Centaur, Ghoul, Kelpie, Manticore, Merepeople, Sphinx, Werewolf (Lycanthrope) and Yeti.
