Sažetak
The thesis investigates the concept of boarding schools and boarding school settings in young adult fiction. The analyzed novels include mostly school stories such as “Tom Brown's Schooldays” by Thomas Hughes and “Goodbye, Mr. Chips” by James Hilton, but other novels, like “Mill on the Floss” by George Eliot and Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling are also considered. The thesis focuses on describing the settings, teacher and student characters, as well as typical topics, such as bullying, sports, punishment, subjects, classes, cheating, etc. It is concluded that boarding schools are the typical settings of school story, a traditional genre of young adult fiction and children’s literature in general, but such a setting is also found in some fantasy, coming-of-age and problem novels.
