Sažetak
Significant changes in economic, financial and social systems occurring in the last decade have caused a growing lack of trust in institutions of market economy. Consequently, awareness of responsibility towards society is becoming the imperative imposed by world expectations, recent happenings and business trends. One of the starting points for creation of social capital is socially responsible behaviour and business. Banks, as key participants of modern economy and an integrative part of social environment have a huge impact on community. Recently they have developed numerous ways of creating social capital. By providing guidelines for socially responsible practices of European banks, the paper attempts to encourage reflection on potential of such practices and benefits they create for society. The aim of the paper is to examine, demonstrate and critically analyse socially responsible practices in Croatian banking industry in accordance with the European Banking Federation framework. Through analysis of European banking sector best practices, the paper assesses current role of Croatian banks and their contribution to creation of social capital.
