Sažetak
In the SW Pannonian Basin, three groups of Alpine postorogenic formations can be distinguished. The oldest parts of its Tertiary sedimentary basin fill in Croatia are Upper Oligocene/Lower Miocene (Egerian and Eggenburgian) paralic and marine sediments accompanied by volcanics and pyroclastics which crop out only in the Western marginal part of the Pannonian Basin and were penetrated by wells in deeper parts of the Mura and Drava Basins. The Neogene sedimentary sequence in major subsidences i.e., in the Sava and Drava Basins starts with Ottnangian-Karpatian transitional deposits that are covered by marine Badenian and brackish to freshwater Pannonian-Pontian formations, all of them interlayered with synsedimentary volcanics. Pliocene and Quaternary terrestrial deposits overlie most of the former depositional basins. The most important depocentres in the SW part of the Pannonian Basin system are the Mura Basin, Sava Basin and Drava Basin. Those basins have been studied in more details, but the Hrvatsko Zagorje and Bjelovar areas are discussed as well because of their peculiarities. Numerous papers have been published on the South Pannonian Basin (SPB) in Croatia and, most recently, these have been summarised and their inherent problems discussed by LUČIĆ et al. (in press).
