Sažetak
Analysis of mtDNA (HSV-I sequencing and typing of haplogroup specific RFLPs) and Y chromosome markers (seven biallelic markers and six STRs) was performed in five Slavic populations: Russians, Poles, Czechs, Slovaks and Croatians. Some neighboring Finno-Ugric and Altaic populations were also studied for comparisons: Estonians, Hungarians, Udmurts, Maris, Chuvashis, Tatars and Turks. In total, these data of more than 1500 individuals were compared to data available about western European populations. Analyses of both mtDNA and Y chromosome of Slavs revealed significant admixture with populations neighboring them geographically. The frequency distributions observed in Europe of haplogroup U3, U4, U5, M J1 in mtDNA and haplogroups 3 and 16 in Y chromosome also pass through territories inhabited by Slavs. The Western European populations such as Germans, Austrians, Swiss. The populations located to east instance, high percentage of C allele in Tat locus of the Y chromosome in Ugric substratum of the territory populated by Russians. The Croatians also show more proximity with their non-Slavic neighbours. We conclude that in most cases the haplogroup frequencies in Slavs correlate more with geographic location of population than with its linguistic affiliation.
