Sažetak
Aqueous mineral reactivities strongly depend on the electrostatic properties of mineral/solution interfaces. Electron transfer processes at semi- conducting mineral/solution interfaces is complicated by an unknown potential distribution across interfaces that include charge redistribution in the solid and that may differ from one crystal face to the next. Potentiometric titrations of single crystal hematite surfaces indicate that crystallographically distinct faces exhibit distinct charging behavior, and that this can be related to surface structure. Here we compare the charging characteristics of four hematite faces ; (001), (012), (113), and (214). We link face-specific charging behavior with charge accumulation reactions known to occur on each surface. Furthermore, Mott-Schottky analysis was used to compare differences in the flatband potentials of distinct crystal faces over a range pH values. Potential biases on the order of ~0.1 V can exist between distinct crystallographic faces, which play an important role in electron transfer reactions at these interfaces.
