Sažetak
Maternal diet during lactation has been shown to influence the fatty acid composition of breast milk. There is a paucity of studies about dietary intake of Croatian lactating women and the fatty acid composition of their milk. The study sample consisted of 83 lactating women who were studied at three measurements rounds: 1±0.25, 3±0.25 and 6±0.25 months postpartum. At each measurement round, diet records were obtained and milk samples were collected. Diet records included two consecutive 24-hour dietary recalls. The fatty acid composition of human milk was determined by gas chromatography. The average energy intake of lactating women was 8840.4±2565.9 kJ, while the average share of proteins, carbohydrates and fats in total energy intake was 13.3%, 50.7% and 36 %, respectively. During six months postpartum, energy intake significantly decreased (p<0.001), while the share of total fats (p=0.006) and saturated fats (p=0.048) significantly increased. The intake of selected vitamins (A, B1, B6, D and E) and selected minerals (calcium, magnesium, zinc, phosphorus, iron and selenium) continuously decreased during 6 months postpartum. The intakes of all vitamins and some minerals (calcium, magnesium and zinc) were below the recommendations for this group. The composition of fatty acids in breast milk changed during six months in relation to maternal energy intake and the intake of carbohydrates and fats. The share of saturated fatty acids continuously increased (p<0.001), while the share of monounsaturated fatty acids decreased (p<0.001), such as the share of polyunsaturated fatty acids (p<0.001). The share of trans fatty acids continuously increased (p<0.001). Changes in maternal dietary intake during six months postpartum influenced the fatty acid composition of their milk.
