Sažetak
Pharmaceuticals, both in their parent form and as metabolites, are commonly released into the environment at trace levels through conventional sewage treatment plants. Therefore, it is not surprising that research has recently been directed toward the application of non-biological processes for the destruction of pharmaceuticals in water system with the emphasis on advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). If the mineralization is not complete, the system may contain more toxic organic substances. So, the evaluation of toxicity by measuring the bioluminescence inhibition of Vibrio fischeri bioassay after AOPs (Fenton process) was performed on investigated veterinary pharmaceuticals: fluoroquinolone antibiotic ciprofloxacin, glucocorticosteroid dexamethasone, anthelmintic febantel, sulfonamide antibiotic sulfamethoxazole an their synergist trimethoprim, which have a wide production and use in Croatia and abroad. The results indicate that all investigated pharmaceuticals can cause significant adverse effect on the tested bacteria Vibrio fischeri by prolonged and continuous input of investigated pharmaceuticals in the environment.
