Sažetak
The scope of this paper is to examine discourses on islands in selected scientific literature in the area of anthropology, sociology, human geography and economy of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century. The concept being explored here is that of islandness as a geographical determinant of island communities, and as a set of metaphors describing islands as locations which are temporally and spatially separated from the ‘modernity’ of the mainland, places rich with travels to the past and encounters with the ‘authoctonous’. The purpose of the overview is to find the interpretative framework for the study of everyday life on the Croatian island of Šolta during the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century.
