Sažetak
In Croatian part of the BECAN epidemiological study, ethical and methodological issues can be divided into two topics ; first topic is concerned with consents for children and parents participation. Croatian ethical code for research with children stipulates that for children who are younger than 14, written consent from their parents must be obtained for their participation in the research. For children older than 14 there is no such requirement, however their parents must be previously informed about the research. To achieve better parental response rate, we have organized parental meetings in schools, where they were informed about the study and had an opportunity to give or refuse to give their consent for their child’s participation in the research. The strategy and benefits of organizing parental meetings, as opposed to sending consent forms by mail, will be presented. Second topic is concerned with reporting of detected violence against children. In Croatia there is a law that obliges experts to report any violence against children to the authorities. Accordingly, we decided to report only violence that is disclosed in direct communication between the child and the researcher, but if the violence is disclosed only in questionnaires, the anonymity and confidentiality were preserved. This faces the researchers with two challenges: first one is that in cases where a child is unable to fill out the questionnaire on his/her own (i.e. because of cerebral paralysis) there is a necessity for a researcher (or a child’s personal school assistant) to assist the child in filling out the questionnaire. That places the researcher in a conflicting role– one is to gain as much knowledge about the phenomenon as possible and the other is to protect the child from violence and to report any detected cases of violence. The other challenge is that it is possible to pinpoint a particular child with high accuracy although his/her name is unknown. This poses an ethical challenge whether to engage in finding the abused child in order to help him/her and thus break the anonymity and confidentiality of research.
