Sažetak
Quality maintenance of bridges is a prerequisite to ensure reliability and comfort of road traffic in service. Careful and detailed structural reconstruction of bridges, based on the analysis of the entire load bearing structure state, may be necessary in case of increased traffic intensity, or if for some reasons bridge stability has been compromised. To preserve the required safety and structural characteristics, there is a need for unique assessment of existing condition, resistance analysis and strengthening, if necessary. This would ensure durability and allow the safe use of existing structures in accordance with today's needs. Masonry arch bridges, made of stone or brick, are historically valuable structures still in service, thanks to the reliable structural system and over dimensioned elements, as a consequence of experience and craftsmanship based construction. Resistance analyses of masonry arch structures, based on new European codes and recent foreign research, deterioration mechanisms and consequences of the effects of exposure to long-standing use and aggressive environment are presented. Practical application is highlighted by examples of the reconstruction of several historical bridges in Croatia, based on present experience.
