Sažetak
Pure beauty of numerous bridges, built as harmonious and stable structures, brings out the story of great builder who fostered joy of creation, enthusiasm and delight of beauty. The life story of professor Kruno Tonković (1911- 1989), designer of many important bridges and other structures, author of many books and scientific papers, teacher and supervisor of many generations of Croatian civil engineers, pioneer and innovator of many projects for the future, presented in this paper on the occasion of 100th anniversary of his birth, is an essential and very important part of the Croatian civil engineering history. Creative work of professor Tonkovića makes him the greatest Croatian bridge engineer of all times and his name should be highlighted among the few names of the top builders in our region. Based on the work of professor Kruno Tonković and his teacher, engineer Milivoj Frković, an original and prolific school of bridge engineering has been developed in Zagreb during the last century. Having such great teachers, the 90-years old tradition of the Zagreb school of structural art in bridge engineering continues with new challenges.
