Sažetak
The chemical characterization of archaeological ceramics can shed light to the provenance of raw materials for production and the technological processes related to ceramics manufacture. Content of lanthanides and their mutual variations can imply to the geochemical characteristics of the raw materials used for ceramics production and also to the distinction of the production techniques. Atomic spectrometry methods are widespread and very useful for simultaneous determination of the lanthanides in ceramics samples. In this work, the content of the selected lanthanides in samples of archaeological ceramics dated form different historical periods and sampled on deposits of antique town Siscia is determined by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP–AES) and instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA). Simultaneous determination of lanthanides by Prodigy High Dispersion ICP Spectrometer (Teledyne Leeman Labs, USA) was acquired by echelle spectrometer equipped with L–PAD detector. Instrumental working conditions were optimized after preliminary selection of the most appropriate emission lines of lanthanide elements. Microwave assisted digestion is used for the preparation of sample solutions and the analytical procedure is controlled with standard reference materials. In order to obtain results for differentiation of samples of archaeological ceramics, the use of nitric acid φ(HNO3) = 50%, was assessed as adequate matrix for the sample preparation. The obtained results from ICP-AES measurement were compared to element content measured by INAA technique. The resemblance of lanthanide content measured by two techniques in similar ceramic samples was confirmed. Also, the content of several elements indicate their use as a key-markers for the differentiation between coarse and fine ceramic samples. Nevertheless, the content of lanthanides in archaeological ceramics determined by ICP–AES and INAA clearly showed a distinct variation regarding to historical periods and production techniques of ceramic samples.
