Sažetak
Most of biological rhythms are cyclic or rhythmic in nature, i.e. they are composed of sequences which appear at certain time intervals. They may affect the state of organism by their mutual interference modified by the effects of environmental factors.
The aim of this investigation was to find out possible interference between rhythms of some psychophysiological variables, which have 24-hours period, and the variables which determine menstrual cycle. Further aim was to define some characteristics of the complex rhythm, which appears as the result of interference between these rhythms.
Twenty-three female subjects (students), 18 to 22 years of age, took part in this investigation. Their body temperature measurements, choice reaction time and residual mental capacity were recorded every day in the morning during a single menstrual cycle (28ą2 days). During this period four circadian experiments were organised every seven days, which included hourly measurements of body temperature, choice reaction time and residual mental capacity during 24 hours period.
The results where analysed by the use of spectral analysis, which showed interferences between menstrual cycle and circadian cycle of body temperature, choice reaction time and residual mental capacity. The analysis confirmed sinusoidal waveforms of these rhythms and a significant tendency of superpositioning of the circadian rhythms to the menstrual rhythm.
Generally speaking, this study showed that psychobiological rhythms, within the organism interfered with each other, resulting in a new complex rhythm. Negative effects of these interferences on efficiency (complex reaction time and residual mental capacity) was shown during night and early morning hours during so called premenstrual and menstrual phases of the menstrual cycle. Contrary to this, the interference of the rhythms seemed to have positive effects on the efficiency during the midday and afternoon hours in the ovulatory phase of menstrual cycle.
