Sažetak
World's annual sugar production from sugar beet is about 35 million tonnes. Europe is the major world producer of sugar from sugar beet and the annual production is about 25 million tonnes. Sugar beet is an important industrial crop in Croatian agricultural production. This paper observes sugar beet production in the period from 2006 to 2010. The data was collected from Croatian sugar beet factories. These data show that in Croatia from 2006 to 2010 sugar beet was grown on average 26 831 ha and average root yield was 51.23 t ha-1. In previous five years Croatian producers achieved average sugar content of 15.41%, which is lower than average sugar content of developed European countries, whose farmers achieved sugar content of approximately 18%. Farmers in Croatia tend to achive higher yield per unit area and of course, try to achieve higher sugar content.
