Sažetak
In road construction, slag has been mainly used as an aggregate in asphalt mixtures while the area of slag application in stabilized base courses is very little explored. Since road construction, compare with other branches of civil engineering is biggest consumer of natural resources, it is necessary to reduce its negative influence on the environment. Since the usage of local materials, so as the waste materials is imperative of modern civil engineering with the aim of economical and environmentally friendly engineering, research in the field of local and waste materials usage in road construction will make for domestic road construction fit in the sustainable development framework. So within this dissertation, possibility of slag usage as an aggregate in stabilized base courses in combination with gravel from river Drava as local material is to be investigated as a contribution to the reduction of the natural resources exhaustion and solving the problem of industrial waste. The aim of this research is finding the optimal share of binder and waste aggregate in cement stabilized base courses through investigation of basic engineering properties. With the purpose of composition optimization, 15 different mixtures will be investigated Through a preliminary investigation, parameters required for the samples preparation (the water content and reference density- Proctor compaction test) will be defined. With these data, samples will be made for determination of the basic engineering properties. Within main research, samples will be cured for 7, 28, 90 and 180 days after which the compressive and indirect tensile strength will be defined. For dynamic modulus of elasticity determination, ultrasonic velocity and resonance frequency tests will be conducted. All obtained data will be statistically processed to determine whether they meet the criteria defined by national standards. Demonstration of possible slag application in cement stabilized base courses will ensure preservation of natural materials that are basic materials in Croatian road construction as well as reducing slag landfills. Based on the obtained results, guidelines for the use of slag as road construction material will be provided. The new findings about the possibilities of local material application combined with alternative materials are also expected.
