Sažetak
As implant materials magnesium alloys have many advantages over stainless steels, cobalt-base alloys, and titanium alloys, because their implants, as biodegradable materials, are not necessary to remove from the body by repeated surgeries. However, application of magnesium alloys as orthopedic implants was inhibited due to their high corrosion rates in body fluids containing high concentration of Cl- ions. To improve their corrosion resistance, various surface treatments have been studied, and presented in several review papers. One of these treatments, the deposition of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of biocompatible organic molecules on the alloy surface may be the preferred choice. The aim of the present work was to study the influence of SAMs of hexadecanoic (palmitic, PA) and of octadecanoic (stearic, SA) acids, as biocompatible endogenous compounds, on the corrosion resistance of the Mg alloy (AZ91D) in Hanks's solution. The SAMs of PA and SA were formed on both spontaneously passivated and potentiostatically anodized specimens. Anodization was performed in an alkaline borate/tetraborate solution, pH 12, at room temperature.
