Sažetak
Longer retention of seedlings in the greenhouse and the use of a larger volume of substrate, i.e., space, positive impact on the growth of seedlings and possibly the subsequent growth in the field and yield potential. The effect of seedlings age and cell volume, on the yield components of the cabbage cultivar 'Hurricane', was researched in summer-autumn growing period of 2010 in continental region of peninsula Istria, Croatia. The two factors field trial was set up according to four-replication randomized complete design and included two seedlings age (4 and 7 weeks) and three cell volume (20, 25 and 32 cm3) of polystyrene trays with 104, 160 and 204 cells, respectively. Planting of seedlings was performed on June 22 and harvest of cabbage heads on October 2. At the moment of planting the higher values of the height, shoot and root fresh weight and leaves number had the seedlings with the biggest cell volume, regardless of seedlings age. Average marketable yield, head mass, height and diameter, also inner stalk height were not affected by different seedlings age or cell volume, or their interaction. Regardless of the treatments applied in the research, had mass was in range 1.84 to 2.13 kg and marketable yield in range 63.3 to 78.7 t•ha-1 which is at the level of European standards for the late cultivars. Based on research results, lower age (4 weeks) and the lowest volume of substrate (20 cm3) can be recommended as optimal for the cabbage seedlings production. This is appropriate for seedlings producer because the cost per seedling increases with time and growing space provided. Also it is appropriate for vegetable grower as in the case of delaying planting taken seedlings due to unfavorable weather conditions, aging seedlings up to 7 weeks will not adversely affect yield components of cabbage.
