Sažetak
This paper presents a novel, fast algorithm for building spatial maps in mobile robotics using a single rotating sonar element with a focused beam. The main goal of the algorithm is to correct the missing reflections due to absorbing materials which can be present in a in-door environment. The rotating sonar process yields an image built up by the reflections of the ultrasonic beam. Interpretation of the reflections is performed using an image-understanding approach based on texture analysis. Texture analysis, in fact, allows to look at the image on a large scale thus giving the possibility to infer the overall behaviour of the reflection process.
