Sažetak
Wild boar (Sus scrofa L.) tusks are elongated elodont canines of males that exhibit constant growth. Tusks are multifunctional teeth that participate in feeding process, aggressive encounters with other males, marking of the territory and are used in self-defense. In this study a set of 50 (28 with fracture and 22 intact) tusks (each are composed of 2 maxillar and 2 mandibular canines) were measured and growth curve angle was determined using a special scheme. In the case of fractured canines, a comparative measurement on intact one was made according to the distance between fracture point and a base of the tooth. In more cases, on intact tusks, smaller growth angle on mandibular canines was followed by larger angle on opposite, maxillar canine. Difference in angles on two maxillar canines was influenced with difference on mandibular ones. By comparing the curve angle between left and right mandibular and left and right maxillar canines in intact tusks largest measured difference was 5.5o. In the case of fractured canines largest measured difference was 10o. However, all other values of angles were higher in the case of damaged canines. From the results obtained it seems that disproportion in growth curves and by that the way of occlusion and biomechanical properties can influence tusk predisposition to fracture. However, since tusks are used in various purposes, further research of their biomechanical properties, resistance to fracture and growth characteristics is needed. By measuring the angle of growth curve and length of intact maxillar and mandibular canines we observed that fluctuating asymmetry in our sample was in favor of the left side of the jaw (mandibular canines – longer left one in 14 samples, same size 6 samples, longer right one in 8 samples ; maxillar canines – 14-5-9). Larger growth angle was determined in 12 left mandibular canines and 4 right ones. In the case of maxillar canines larger growth angle was detected in L-11 and R-5 samples.
