Analyses of Photochromic Protective Smart Textile Durasevic Vedran1, Osterman-Parac Durdica1 1Department of Textile Chemistry and Ecology, Faculty of Textile Technology, Zagreb, Croatia vedran.durasevic@ttf.hr ABSTRACT Smart textiles have attracted a lot of attention over past years due to the ideal combination of conventional concept of textiles with state of the art advances from the field of informational technologies. Novel dye and pigment syntheses have added new functionalities on the level of molecules, such as sensitivity to light or temperature. Scientists have made efforts to incorporate these molecules onto textile materials by improving technological processes in the aim of increasing various properties such as fastness to rubbing, washing and care or fastness to light. Ideally, these molecules incorporated onto textile material form a smart textile capable of indicating changes in its surrounding in terms wavelength of emitted light (photochromism), temperature (thermochromism) or pH (halochromism). At the same time good fastness properties should be exhibited, allowing a large number of cycles and sharp, clear shifts between excited and unexcited molecule states, meaning a clearly visible change in colour of the substrate. Being a rather new field of research, efforts need to be made in order of qualifying these molecules by standard analytical methods. Challenge of this paper was to use a method of thin layer chromatography (TLC), find a most suitable elutant and divide constituting components of reportedly photochromic/thermochromic dyes. For this purpose a set of commercially available dyes from Sigma Aldrich and PPG were used and compared from calculated Rf values, based on which histograms were prepared. According to elutant, dyes were found to most probably belong to a group of disperse dyes, exhibiting in most cases several peaks. On the level of TLC some similarities were found among investigated dyes. Research was broadened by applying investigated dyes onto cotton textiles using a method of screen printing. Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) was used as basic thickener and influence of dye concentration onto colorimetric reflectance was investigated. Reported results have confirmed investigated dyes to be suitable in the aim of obtaining low cost smart textiles. Keywords: photochromic, UV, TLC, colorimetry
