Sažetak
This article reports on a small-scale study aimed at investigating students’ perceptions of what they learned after the completion of Maritime English 1 and Maritime English 2 courses. It is about student self-assessment of subject-specific skills and competences, one dimension of the many learning outcomes a higher education institution gives rise to. Emphasis is placed on the assessment of a student’s perception of competence across receptive and productive skills. Two waves of measurement were conducted with an interval of nine months between them. At each wave of measurement, the students filled in the questionnaires at the site of the study. The sample consisted of 109 first-year students at the time of the first measurement (January 2010), and 63 at the time of the second measurement (October 2010). The data were analysed using descriptive statistics, and correlations between different subscales were identified. The results indicate that the second wave of measurement showed a decline in the students’ perception of their ability to perform well. The only marked increase in the perceived abilities after Maritime English 2 course was documented in the ability to participate in discussions on professional topics and to give opinion in study contexts such as classrooms, tutorials and consultation hours. An increase was also marked in the ability to follow the main points in discussions about professional topics. The students thought their skills were good or very good. At the time of the first measurement, reading skills indicated a high correlation with listening skills. Low correlation was displayed between reading skills and grammar, and between listening skills and grammar. At the time of the second measurement, writing skills showed a high correlation with presenting skills, while grammar and reflective skills were moderately correlated.
