Sažetak
The electrochemical method based on the measurement of adsorption effects at the mercury electrode surface was used for determination of the hydrophobic surfactant activity of organic constituents of the bulk phase as well as of interfacial microlayer samples in marine and freshwater systems. Enrichment factors for hydrophobic surfactants in the interfacial region, in relation to the bulk phase, were calculated. In comparison with the behaviour of total surfactants and dissolved organic matter, the hydrophobic surfactants were found to possess several times higher enrichment factors at the air-sea interface, as well as in the organic layer at the halocline in a stratified estuary. The uptake of hydrophobic surface-active material by sorption at the mineral-water interface in the freshwater system is also several times higher than for total surfactants. Fractionation of organic matter occurs in the interfacial region, resulting in a different organic chemical composition in the interfacial layers from that in the aqueous bulk phase. Hydrophobic and hydrophilic fractions of the total adsorbable organic solutes were separated by sorption on an XAD-8 resin. Adsorption characteristics of separated fractions were investigated by a.c. polarography, which showed that natural aquatic samples contain complex mixtures of organic compounds with different adsorption and dielectric properties, among which the hydrophobic fraction usually dominates in the adsorption of organic matter at model and natural phase boundaries.
