Sažetak
In order to broaden our understanding about origins and organizational patterns of repetitive DNA sequences as builders of eukaryotic genomes, we explored satellite DNAs in the clam Donax trunculus. The approach utilized in this work disclosed two novel satellite DNAs, one related to the broadly distributed BIV160 satellite DNA family (Plohl et al. 2010), while the other revealed a new family of tandem repeats. Satellites characterized in this work, as well as some satellites detected previously in the same organism, show sequence similarity with diverse types of mobile elements, mutually unrelated in DNA sequences as well as in mechanisms of transposition. Our observations strongly suggest the dominant role of these elements and transposition in general as a major mechanism responsible for shaping the characteristic pattern of satellite DNA sequences and overall structuring of the clam genome.
