Sažetak
The CC WaterS (Climate change and impacts on water supply) project was funded by the European Union within the South East Europe Transnational Cooperation Programme (SEE–TC). The leading partner is Vienna waterworks (Austria). The project involves 18 partner institutions from 9 countries: Austria (3 partners), Slovenia (3), Hungary (1), Italy (1), Romania (3), Bulgaria (1), Greece (3), Croatia (1), and Serbia (2). The Croatian partners are the Hrvatske vode and the Croatian Geological Survey as external experts. For some specific tasks defined by the project outline, other subcontracting specialists were involved (Croatian Meteorological and Hydrological Service from Zagreb and Faculty of Civil Engineering from Rijeka). Research in Croatia has focused on three pilot areas (Lake Vrana on the island of Cres, Bokanjačko Blato near Zadar and Blatsko Polje on the island of Korčula). The study of the current water balance and that predicted under conditions of possible climate change, represents the most important part of the project. Croatian researchers, besides the mentioned survey of recent changes, will undertake further research on climatic variations/changes through the entire Holocene through multiproxy studies of sediments. This will allow reconstruction of climate variations that occurred in the recent geological past, and whether recent trends can be interpreted as part of longer-lasting climate variations and whether human impact causes these changes and/or accelerates them.
