Sažetak
We live in the time which requires processing a large number of information. Since kindergarten, kids are exposed to contemporary technologies and to more and more information. It can be noticed that the exposure to contemporary technologies and the processing of a large number of information does not always influence communicative competence of primary school children in a positive way. Researches show that the vocabulary of primary school children is very poor, that they often have difficulty expressing themselves and that they do not do that a lot. Also, although many books and other literature are available to them, especially on the Internet, it is noticed that the children read less and rare. According to that, the results of their reading competence were bad (PISA project, 2010.). It can be concluded that a large number of information and availability of different contents do not increase lingual and literal competence in primary school children in Croatia. Therefore a research has been done about the reading habits, media watching and generally spending time in children of primary school. Besides the attitudes questionnaire, their written competence was also tested to check their competence in lexicology, morphology, and how competent they are in grammar and style. The results should show the reading habits of children in primary school in Croatia and their level of communicative competence. Also, besides the reading and language competence the research should show the habits of children in primary school in Croatia and their ability to spend their time. The children (N= 160) were questioned by the survey and were present at one class where their written communicative competence was checked. The sum of all the results will give concrete guidance for further research, but it can be concluded that if we do not encourage language activities of listening, speaking, reading and writing, we will not manage to have competent speakers of Croatian language.
