Sažetak
In this paper I present the music and sound component of mock-combat and sword chain dances in relation to other music practices on the island of Korčula, and further afield, in the context of traditional music and culture in Dalmatia. I observe the role and function of music within the entirety of the events in which the mock-combat dances are performed ; the relation between music accompaniment (music motifs) and figures in the dance itself ; communication between the performer of the music and performer of the dance, ad the manner of their coordination throughout the performance ; the norms, opportunities and possibilities for improvisation in the music accompaniment ; local (and individual) differences in music accompaniment and their importance for the performers themselves ; changes in the music components ascertained on the basis of available historical sources and field data.
