Sažetak
There is the need for measures for governing carbon dioxide emissions, while the entry into force of firm International Maritime Organization controls in 2020 provides a strict deadline against which the industry can balance the benefits of a range of technology enhancements and fuel options. There is no flawless technological fix to lower emissions using traditional diesel or LPG fuels, and nuclear energy is emerging as a practical option. Although development of nuclear merchant ships began in the 1950s, the result was not commercially successful. The US-built NS Savannah commissioned in 1962 and decommissioned in 1970 was a technical success, but not economically sustainable. The German-built Otto Hahn cargo ship and research facility sailed 126 voyages in 10 years without any technical problems, but proved too expensive to operate and was converted to diesel propulsion. As the technology and economic environment has been changed in the last 40 years, authors calculate economic aspects of nuclear merchant ships, with comparison to traditional diesel powered ships.
