Sažetak
The leading economic indicators usually are used for prediction of economic trends. In the article, the authors analyze and discuss some of the most important indicators (macroeconomic variables, financial business results) and their role in prediction of Croatian small and medium sized companies’ business trend. Macroeconomic statistic data are collected from Croatian bureau of statistics (cro. DZS) and Croatian national bank (cro. HNB) databases and the financial data are gathered from the reports of the leading Croatian company in the field of financial mediation - Financial Agency (cro. FINA). Through the period of five years, which also encompasses the period of global financial crisis, the authors show a summary of past trends and give a viewpoint where the SMEs are going in the future. From that aspect, the paper deals with the causes and consequences and also with the survival of Croatian SMEs in the global economic environment affected by financial crisis. For comparison of Croatian recovery with the recovery of EU countries, the authors use IMF and EUROSTAT data. The main question is what are the most critical trends affecting Croatian SMEs? At the end, the authors give some recommendation for strategic change and some implication for further research.
