Sažetak
Cytolological investigations were conducted of the following willows: Salix sitchensis Bong., a complex hybrid between S. alba L. x S. fragilis L. x S. caprea L. (S. x savensis Trinajstić et Krstinić), a hybrid clone of S. alba x S. sitchensis, and the white Salix alba L. The cytological analysis confirmed the diploid nature of S. sitchensis, the triploid nature of S. alba x S. sitchensis clone V 164, and the tetraploid nature of S. alba. It was not possible to obtain a chromosome count for S. x savensis, as dividing cells were not observed. In nursery conditions, hybrid triploid and putative triploid clones expressed vigorous juvenile growth, making them suitable for biomass production in short rotations (2-6 years) at dense spacings. Field tests of hybrid and tetraploid clones on various hydromorphic soil types along the Drava and the Sava rivers, revealed that a S. alba x S. sitchensis triploid clone V 164 exhibited slower diameter growth rate then tetraploid S. alba clones. For intensive plantations in long rotations, planting of hybrid, triploid clones was not recommended due to slower volume production.
