Sažetak
According to the data about trends in the Mediterranean market of nautical tourism, it is beyond doubt that Croatian part of Adriatic became one of the imperative destinations of sea lovers, and according to the American Cruising World, it is, together with the Caribbean, one of the best nautical areas in the world. Taking into consideration that the capacities of receiving nautical tourists (marinas, berths and anchorages) and services at the level of the needs of a decade ago and are more like cheap hotel accommodation, we have to be aware that we have not taken advantage of the potential which may initiate the entire economic development of the coastal and insular area, and the whole of Croatia. Principal alternative during the process of nautical development has to be the preservation of ecologically uncontaminated nature, of mystery and of original Mediterranean cultural environment. Moreover, it must not be forgotten that boaters come for enjoying the sea, that a marina for them is just an inevitable necessity, and that they want to reach their yacht as soon as possible and sail towards their adventure. The leading role in the implementation of this orientation has to be assigned to the government which has to use experience of the major leading countries in nautical tourism, but also to adjust the development to local specific qualities. In managing the nautical development through its competent departments (Tourism administration, Maritime administration, Croatian Hydrographic Institute), it is necessary to determine strict standards and set up control mechanisms, in order to preserve attractiveness, but also to enable sustainable and controlled development of islands and coast. The main slogan of the strategy of nautical development should be “Nautical science is a resource which needs to be managed”.
