PANORAMIC VIEWS OF BOL A CONGRATULATORY ADDRESS TO THE GENERATION OF 2010, INSTEAD OF A CONCLUSION The inspiring urban physiognomy of Bol, its preserved historic habitat, its cultivated tourist milieu and the picturesque scenery inland with ancient vineyards and olive groves, Vidova Gora and the reef running beyond Zlatni Rat promontory have provided generations of students of architecture with an inspiring ambient and environment catering to a special form of education, which goes by the name: Bolska ljetna kola (the Bol Summer School). Each year, at the end of August, a group of students of architecture selected from the Faculties of Architecture in Zagreb and in Split stay in Bol and consider alternative approaches to design unconventional, creative design, liberated from programmatic propositions, formulated through a framework without the encumbrance of work necessitating results. During the summer school in 2010 students encountered this specific genius loci on Bra at the stone quarry in Pu iaa, within the archaic spaces of Zmajeva Spilja (Dragon s Cave) beneath Murvice, within the perfect urban environs of neighbouring Hvar. As Dinko would say, experience gained through the sea, wine, song and love. Designs were drawn up towards the end of the course, once everything experienced, the vistas of Bra , and a feeling for its spaces, had matured, spaces which are always unique and different, bubbling with significance and meaning and a personal approach evident in the solutions provided. Students were given two topics to consider with significantly differing spatial connotations Joza Bodlovi Square in the centre of the historic core of the town, behind the parish church, and the belvedere above Bol. The undefined space of the square, which had been somewhat degraded and designated as a marketplace, was unstructured and lacked urban attributes, but was very propulsive and scenic . The belvedere, as a new theme to Bol s tourist offer, is a place offering an initial spectacular view of one of the most magnificent sights on the Central Adriatic the Hvar Channel with Bol further down the coastline between the Dominican monastery and Zlatni Rat. And students reacted wondrously to this challenge. Some of the solutions for the Square provided a finely designed podium incorporating and imposing and accentuating the bust of Joza Bodlovi in a well-deliberated manner, whilst providing the entire space with an urban trait including pergolas and stalls, elements for seating and the gathering of people, which are vital for Mediterranean towns. The Square has become a point where people pass, gather, trade and a memorial, as well as being provided with a new terrace overlooking the sea. On the other hand, the belvedere has been designed as a stopping place with an attractive plateau placed high above the town. In some concepts, this is an auditorium, a theatre with a view of heaven on earth , in some it is a stage for a real-time scenic space which can even be used as a summer stage of Parnassus-like beauty. It is always a horizontal lying beneath the level of the road, invisible, yet spectacular in the view it affords. Although courses are of short duration and the solutions provided are only associative ideas that need to be planned further, the Bol School in 2010 confirmed that it is one of the best creative references in alternative education offered to future architects, and an internationally relevant meeting place which will need to become an international event for future generations, both in the selection of its participants, as well as in the choice of its mentors. @`BGHKXORRS$a$gdi$a$gd~$w,1h/ =!"#$% @@@ NormalCJ_HaJmH sH tH DA@D Default Paragraph FontRi@R Table Normal4 l4a (k@(No List]V+67Etuv2 R ,yz{; [\_00000000000000000000000000000000000( Nx> y$S@S*SJ@ABCDEFHIJKLMNQRoot Entry FhK9KSData ,1Table4GWordDocument.VSummaryInformation(?DocumentSummaryInformation8GCompObjq FMicrosoft Office Word Document MSWordDocWord.Document.89q
