Sažetak
The strength of interactions between nonionic surfactant n-dodecyl-β-D-maltoside (DM) and cationic surfactant dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) was investigated. The potentiometric method based on the use of DTAB ion-selective membrane electrode, and an appropriate theoretical model was chosen to quantify the strength of interactions between DM and DTAB. The equilibrium constant of DTAB-DM complex formation, K1, was determined and the thermodynamic functions standard free energy change, ΔG1°, standard enthalpy change, ΔH1°, and standard entropy change, ΔS1°, are calculated for the first association step of DTAB-DM complex formation. The results show that the values of ΔG1° decreases with increasing temperature, meaning that the tendency of DTAB-DM complex formation increases with increasing temperature. The value of ΔH1° is positive therefore the process of DTAB-DM complex formation is endothermic. The positive values of ΔS1° for DTAB-DM complex formation show that the system becomes more random after the transfer of DTAB cation from the aqueous bulk phase into the DM micelle. According to the obtained results of thermodynamic functions it can be concluded that DTAB-DM complex formation is entropy-driven process.
