Sažetak
Washing process is regulated by four factors: chemistry, mechanical agitation, temperature and time. The impact of particular factors can be represented by a washing cycle, within which is the circle dealing with water, which connects the factors in the process. Synergic effect of particular components in the detergent used in washing determines its chemical activity. Mechanical activity is also important, since its interaction with the detergent impacts the changes of textiles that occur in washing. Apart from removing soils and preventing redeposition, chemical and mechanical activities during washing also change the structure of the textile washed. The intensity of these changes depends on the initial level of quality of the textiles washed, as well as upon the processing conditions (temperature, washing agent, mechanical parameters, number of washing cycles, etc.). All of these factors have an impact, and sometimes it is quite hard if not outright impossible to explain all the changes that occur, unless all the parameters are taken into account. The changes, such as the reduction in strength and damages of textiles in washing, depend upon a number of factors, one of them being swelling. Cellulose textiles are exposed to higher swelling in alkali medium washings, which brings about the changes in pore structure, tendency to fibrillation, crystalline and surface changes. The surface changes can be precisely characterized by electrokinetic potential. The swelling ability of cotton fabrics (CO), with and without ironing afterwards, was determined as an electrokinetic parameter, measured by zeta potential, as dependant on pH of the electrolyte solution. The data on the distribution and amount of functional groups in fibre polymers are of particular importance, since they determine fibre structure and behaviour, as well as the changes that occur in washing process. The measure of substrate accessibility was studied using iodine sorption value (ISV).
