Sažetak
- There was dramatic variations in the proportion of pregnant mothers who had intended to get pragnant (range 48-69%), who had ever used oral contraceptives (range 9-94%) and who had previously had induced abortion(s) (range 10-34%).
- Centres with the highest use of the contraceptive pill were those with the lowest rates of previous termination of pregnancy.
- Mothers in the Isle of man and Greece were least likely to have taken more than 12 months to conceive, and Ukraine mothers had the longest period of sub-fertility.
- The proportion of pregnancies facilitated or initiated through medical tretment ranged from 1% to 5% in the study centres.
- Multigravidae in the Russian and Czech centres were less likely to have had a previous miscarriage than mothers in other countries.
- The proportion of multiparae with a previous Caesarean section varied from 23% (Greece) to less than 1% (Russia), the extremes probably representing excess and minimal intervention respectively.
- The ELSPAC data have already been used to change the law in regard to abortion on the Isle of Man. Other countries are likely to find the ELSPAC data informative in any debate on change.
