Sažetak
The centric diatom of quadratic appearance, resembling Cyclotella ocellata Pantocsek was found for the first time in Croatia, in the karstic Lake Visovačko. It develops dense populations in stratified, oligotrophic, karstic lake of the River Krka (Croatia). Quadratic Cyclotella contributed to the phytoplankton community in methalimnion of the Lake with high abundance up to 7.3 x 106 cells L-1 in July. It was dominant species in the phytoplankton community with codominanat round, non chain-forming C. ocellata and green algae Monoraphidium minutum (Nägeli) Komárková-legnerová. We considered this Cyclotella to be Cyclotella trichonidea Economou-Amilli but since it forms loose chains of several cells not described for C. trichonidea further revision of found species based on detailed morphological analyses with light and scanning electron microscope as well as comparison to the type material are needed. Also, it is planned to culture this species along with some other Cyclotella ocellata forms and make DNA comparisons in order to differentiate between different forms and species of this common centric diatom.
