Sažetak
Agricultural activities are frequently associated with groundwater pollution. Nitrates and phosphorus are two important contaminants associated with agriculture. The spreading and storage of fertilizers, for instance, may result in groundwater contamination due to pollutants leaching into an aquifer. In this study, the goal is to assess the nitrate, phosphorus and heavy metals levels and contamination risk in a shallow groundwater aquifer. The investigation was carried out in the area of 6.600 ha of mainly agricultural land was located in Biđ field. Research area was located along a direct route to the future multipurpose canal section from 46 +500 to 57 +500 km. Groundwater quality in the countertop part of the soil profile to 4.0 m depth was monitored by 40 installed hydropedological piezometers. Sampling water from piezometers was carried out every 60 days or six times a year, or 54 times during the period 2002 - 2009. In the groundwater samples, physico-chemical parameters were analyzed including field parameters (pH, electric conductivity, water level) and nutrients (nitrate, nitrite, ammonia and orthophosphate). We have also monitored water quality from lysimeters. Investigations were carried out during a three-year period (2007– 2009) on five locations with traditional agricultural production. The results obtained were based on lysimeter investigations using Zero Tension Pan Lysimeters. In samples from lysimeters we have analyzed nutrients and also heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn). Based on the obtained values in samples from lysimeters it can be interpreted that the mean concentrations of analyzed heavy metals were significantly lower than the value of MAC. According to the indicators it was confirmed that at all locations during the observation period mean concentrations of NH4-N, NO3-N, total nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) in the percolating water from lysimeters occasionally exceeded the value of maximum allowable concentration (MAC) which is prescribed by the Regulations. Observation of traditional agricultural production in the investigation area with emphasis on leaching of nitrogen and phosphorus shows that it represents a potential threat to the future direction of stronger pollution of groundwater and surface water with nitrogen, and in a much lesser extent with phosphorus. Investigation in the area of the multipurpose Danube – Sava Canal indicate a large influence of agriculture on groundwater quality.
