Sažetak
The objective of this thesis is technological sustainment of embedded control systems for rail vehicles and power generation units. They belong to the group of real-time embedded systems and often involve some safety-critical features and non-functional requirements. Such systems are produced in low-volumes and their life cycle is expected to be up to several decades. Therefore, the risk of the obsolescence of its constituent HW and SW components is very high and this threatens the expected long-life. This thesis suggests the concept of platform-based approach that enables the development of different products based on the same platform architecture. Modularity, commonality and reuse of HW and SW components increase possible backward and forward compatibility, thus minimizing obsolescence threats. Suggested approach has been verified by means of different real-life products developed during the past twenty years. Commonality indices for comparing products or product variants on different levels of internal product structures were suggested. It has been demonstrated that proposed commonality indices were also suitable for tracking the introduction of new components and new technologies during the development of new products. The appropriateness of proposed commonality indices has been demonstrated for both software and hardware components and products.
