Sažetak
The immobilization of desired bacteria onto suitable materials as carriers is currently gaining much attention in various fields of biotechnology. By the use of immobilized bacteria a higher cell density and metabolic activity in bioreactors can be achieved and based on this, smaller reactors, shorter retention time or higher flow rates can be employed. The process of biological phosphate removal from wastewater is based on the accumulation of soluble phosphate present in wastewater in the form of nonsoluble polyphosphate granule inside cells of bacteria-which therefore are called phosphate-accumulating bacteria (PAB). The use of immobilized PAB in the wastewater treatment process is promising method for achievement of the higher efficiency of the phosphate removal from wastewaters. The efficiency of an immobilized system for phosphate removal will mainly depend on the properties of the carrier and number of metabolically active viable PAB. The ideal carrier of bacteria should be inert, nontoxic, of porous structure, relatively cheap, easily available, environmental friendly and should provide a rough, irregular surface available for colonization. On such types of carriers the whole external surface, cavities, cervices, irregularities and large pores are accessible for dense bacterial colonization. Among the inorganic carriers, naturally occurring minerals (zeolitized tuffs, quartz sand, bentonite, sepiolite) and amorphous materials (volcanic glass) have been shown as good materials for the immobilization of PAB. The modification of natural minerals with magnesium, potassium or calcium resulted in better immobilization of PAB. The modification of natural minerals with cationic surfactants showed better immobilization of PAB or bactericidal effect, depending on the surfactant loading. The modification of natural minerals with heavy metals such as zinc reversed the positive influence on the immobilization of PAB to bactericidal effect. The commercial synthetic zeolites LTA displayed the toxic effect against PAB, thus causing the failure of phosphate removal from wastewater.
