Sažetak
The process of formation of cultural meanings of belonging and identity are examined in relation to European core and periphery countries. Universalism is usually, stereotypically, ascribed to cultural orientations of the core nations and particularism to the peripheral nations. This assumption is challenged in the article through the analysis of the mechanisms of expansion of power and market economy, which are advantageous to the core countries, thus far their cultural meanings - on the level of official policy and political culture, indeed- are more encompassing, while provincial nations prefer restrictive and defensive cultural meanings, i.e., the national belonging is overwhelms international. However, on the level of the relations toward the others, as measured by social distance scale, this average views of the others among general populations in both core and peripheric countries are equally "universalistic" or "particularistic".
