Sažetak
This paper analyses the present situation in the system of Croatia’s coastal area development planning. It is a fact that the coastal area development planning in Croatia is closely connected to the interests of investors and owners, having, in addition, some political connotations. It is because of the transition processes in the society, which became part of planning practices. In the period between the 1960s and the 1980s most renowned companies that had an important role in planning the coastal area development disappeared. Today, most planners are employees within small firms, whose priority is to keep their market position, while there are insufficient investments in the development and application of methods and techniques. The use of geographic information systems (GIS) for the purpose of coastal planning and management has had positive effects. Today, most municipalities and cities, as well as government companies managing the infrastructure, have digital databases. The problem is the integration of these databases into a common information system. The authors emphasize the integral approach and the use of coastal planning modern methods and techniques, in addition to the involvement of experts and scientists active in a specific field. Measures for improving the existing system are defined and improvements within the public administration decision making system are suggested.
