Sažetak
Tourism is today one of the most important economic activities in the world and one of the largest industries in terms of employment and revenue. International tourism arrivals grew at 3.7% between January and August 2008, compared to the same period of 2007. (UNWTO, 2008 Highlights) Although facing a global crisis and increasingly difficult conditions, UNWTO's Tourism 2020 Vision forecasts that international arrivals are expected to reach nearly 1 billion by 2010 and 1.6 billion by the year 2020. Europe is considered as the largest destination region accounting for over 54% of all international tourist arrivals and 51% of international tourist receipts. Southern and Mediterranean Europe have shown the strongest performance in 2007, whilst significant contribution made the Balkan states including Croatia, Montenegro, Slovenia, Serbia and Bosnia and Hercegovina. Tourism has numerous positive as well as negative impacts on the environment and the social community it operates in. The implementation of the concept of sustainable development in tourism has three interconnected aspects: economic, environmental and social. Achieving sustainable tourism includes offering quality services with optimal use of resources, the protection of biodiversity, the respect of the local culture and tradition. Therefore, the challenge of reaching sustainable tourism is a challange for the society, including diferent stakeholders: public authorities, tourism and other companies, customers, NGOs, etc. Basically, many of the hotel companies all over the world have already recognised that it has become a requirement for businesses to address environment in order to maintain customers and exist in ever critical economy. These companies have recognized that the commitment to sustainable development is a long-term source of competitive advantage. There is an increasing focus by companies to examine their social responsibilities. Considering that, the aim of the paper was to research the environmental attitudes and study the level of environmental knowledge of hoteliers in Dubrovnik area in order to get an impression if hoteliers are aware of the benefits that an effective and successful environmental management system can bring to the hotel company. Authors have analyzed the environmental attitudes of hoteliers in selected five star hotels in Dubrovnik area, which is considered as one of the most beautiful and popular coastal towns in Croatia.
